The ring wall
Out on Gotland lies Visby, one of Scandinavia's best preserved medieval towns and the main town of Region Gotland. Daily life moves at a calm pace between narrow lanes and limestone houses, and inside the ring wall you meet buildings added to from the 1600s onwards.
The town is called the town of roses and ruins, and the name fits. Church ruins such as Sankt Nicolai and Drotten rise among the houses, the Powder Tower keeps watch by the wall and the gates – Söderport, Norderport and Österport – let you in through the old town. At Gotland Museum the history is preserved indoors.
It is exactly that dense weave of lanes, gates and ruins that makes Visby worth wearing. If you have walked through Söderport on a summer evening you already know why the map belongs across your chest.
