About Västerhaninge
The Nynäs line commuter train
The church village and its rune stone
The Hanveden forests
Where the commuter train divides the community in two and the church stands as a fixed point, you find Västerhaninge, a district of Haninge on the Södertörn mainland. Daily life moves between the station, the centre and the open country around it - to the north-west the forests of Hanveden spread out with their walking areas, while the farming landscape opens towards Handen in the north.
There are traces here of something much older than the station community. A rune stone and burial grounds bear witness that people lived on this ground long before the Nynäs line, and the houses nearest the church still form the old church village. On the way through the centre you pass both playing elephants and park animals - small details that belong to daily life and that the children recognise.
The nearest areas carry names such as Åbylund, Norrskogen and Jägartorp, and to the south lies Tungelsta with its old station building still standing. For anyone who grew up between the forest edge and the platform, the map sits in the marrow. Having it across your chest is to carry the feeling of belonging here.
