About Västerås
Asea and the industrial heritage
The Cucumber Town
Västerås cathedral
Some towns carry their history in the air, and in Västerås it feels almost electric. Here on the northern shore of Mälaren the industrial adventure grew up around the turn of the century, when Asea and Svenska Metallverken put the town on the map and became part of electrifying Sweden. The traces remain today, from the Asea rapids to the old turbine house down by the harbour.
Take a turn around and you meet Västerås cathedral rising above the rooftops, the venerable Västerås castle and the open-air museum at Vallby where older times have been left standing. The art museum, St Ursula's chapel and the nickname the town carries warmly - the Cucumber Town - belong to the identity as much as the daily life of a residence town.
The map design catches exactly those blocks and streets, so the next time you pull the shirt on you can follow the way from the cathedral down towards the water with a finger - just as you have done on foot.
