About Varberg
A coastal town on the Kattegat
Harbour and trade
A tourist town
With the Kattegat outside the windows and a harbour that has marked daily life for generations, Varberg has always been a town turned towards the sea. Tourists and trade share the place with a quiet coastal life, and the summer crowds are quickly exchanged for calm walks along the water. At the Halland museum of cultural history you can leaf back through the region's past, while Rantzau's cliff recalls the broken landscape where the town meets the sea.
The town lies in central Halland, halfway between Gothenburg to the north and Halmstad to the south, and to the south it has grown together with Södra Näs and Träslövsläge. The inlets around it – Mjölkebacksviken, Skärsviken and Hamnviken – give the coastline its character, with water that draws people all year round whatever the weather.
It is perhaps at Hamnviken that Varberg feels most itself: the smell of salt, boats coming and going, and a town living in step with the tide. For anyone who grew up here or found their way later in life, the map of the streets and inlets becomes a small piece of Halland to take with you – a map t-shirt with the whole town spread across the chest.
