About Tänndalen

Known for

Mountain village at the Norwegian border

Known for

Hamrafjället

Known for

Tänndalssjön

High up in western Härjedalen, at around 720 metres above sea level and a stone's throw from the Norwegian border, lies the little village of Tänndalen. In South Sami the place is called Teanndaelie, and it belongs to Tännäs parish – a corner of Jämtland county where the mountains are always present. Here it is the landscape that sets the tone, open and expansive, with snow for much of the year.

The map of Tänndalen fills with names that stick. Tänndalssjön spreads out along the valley floor, while Hamrafjället rises above the village as an unmistakable landmark. Around them you find smaller waters such as Stortjärnen, Lilltjärnen and Livsätersåtjärnen, tucked in between the heights – small gems that each have their own place in the terrain.

It is Hamrafjället in particular that many carry with them as a memory. Anyone who has stood up there and watched the valley open out knows why the mountain matters. A shirt with the map of Tänndalen becomes a way to hold on to that feeling – a reminder of the open expanses for those who return here time and again, or dream of doing so.
