About Svanesund
The Svanesund ferry
A ship rock carving
The Svanesund festival
On the eastern side of Orust, right where the sound separates the island from the Bohuslän mainland, lies Svanesund. The ferry crosses from here on the Svanesund route, and the ferry berth sets its own rhythm on daily life – you recognise the sound of cars rolling aboard and the eye seeking out across the water. The town is Orust's second largest after Henån and stretches a couple of kilometres inland.
It is a place with old traces in the rock. The Svanesund rock carvings hold the island's only known ship carving, and beside them is a judge's ring. All around lie inlets and fjords such as Änghagebukten, Djupviken, Tegelviken and Halsefjorden – names a Bohuslän native carries with them. In summer the town also fills with the Svanesund festival, three days of music and life that draw thousands of visitors.
Having Svanesund printed across your chest is less about nostalgia and more about knowing where you belong – where the ferry runs and the sea is never far away.
