About Strängnäs
The cathedral on Kyrkberget
Its setting on Mälaren
Bishop's seat
The cathedral rises above Kyrkberget and is visible far around - that is the picture of Strängnäs you carry with you. The town lies on the southern shore of Mälaren, somewhere between Södertälje and Eskilstuna, and thanks to its position on the old waterway it counts among Sweden's oldest towns. The bishop's seat of Strängnäs diocese has been here a long time, and the church still marks the whole townscape.
But it is at least as much the surrounding nature that makes the place. Walk out into the Tingstuhöjden conservation area or roam among the oaks in Tynäs oak pastures and Bresshammars hage, and you quickly understand why the people of Sörmland stay. At the Gorsingeholm nature reserve the forest meets the water, and the Technology museum draws in those who would rather be under a roof.
There is something in exactly this combination - water, oak pastures and a cathedral pointing at the sky - that stays with you. A map like that across the chest becomes less a garment and more a reminder of where you belong.
