Wartime courage
Stange, also called Stangebyen, lies a little south of Hamar with the European route E6 running along its eastern side and Stange Church a short way to the west. It is the administrative centre of Stange Municipality in Innlandet, and Stange rådhus, the town hall, stands here.
What sets the village apart is a story from the Second World War. The Germans used the railway station at Stange to transport prisoners, and when two Russian prisoners escaped from a train, local people hid them and gave them food and clothes. After a couple of months the men were found, and several of those who had helped them were taken to Germany. It is the kind of history a place carries quietly.
Today Stange is also known for Norsk motorhistorisk museum, the museum of Norway's motoring history, and close by lies Våletjern naturreservat. In the village stands the artwork Sædcella.
If Stange is your village, you know it is more than a sign beside the motorway, and this map shows exactly why.
