About Sorsele
The Vindelälven
The Inlandsbanan museum
Main town in Lapland
At the Inlandsbanan museum in Sorsele, a piece of Lapland railway history lives on, in the middle of the town that is the main town of Sorsele municipality. The Vindelälven, one of the country's last unregulated rivers, flows through the community, and all around the tarns mirror the sky – Sör-Svergoträsket, Gippertjärnen, Mariatjärnen, Kyrktjärnen and Forsmyrtjärnen lie scattered like bright patches in the landscape.
For anyone who grew up here the memories sit in the smell of river water and railway track, in summer evenings by a tarn where the mosquitoes hum and the light never quite goes out. Sorsele carries the Sámi inheritance in its names – Suarssá in Ume Sámi, Suarsa in South Sámi – and that history is embedded in the soul of the place.
Here, far into Lapland, a belonging takes shape that does not disappear even if you move far away. The map of Sorsele catches exactly the places you cycled past as a child and the river you always came back to. Having it across your chest becomes a way of holding on to the feeling of where you come from – the bright tarns, the running water and the railway tracks that once led both home and away.
