About Sollentuna
The Marathon pillar, 1912 Olympics
Sollentunaholm manor
Rune stones
On the height between Sollentunaholm and the parish church stands the Marathon pillar, the turning post for the marathon during the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912. At the jubilee marathon in 2012 the post was moved closer to the church lychgate so that all the entered runners had room to turn – a small piece of history in the middle of what is today a lively suburban community north-west of Stockholm.
Sollentuna is the main town of the municipality that shares its name and lies in Uppland, along the E4 between Stockholm and Uppsala. It is a green landscape with buildings of varying character around the lakes Edsviken and Norrviken. Here stands Sollentunaholm manor from the 1640s, originally raised on Sollentunaholmen beside Norrviken, and in the park next to it stands a rune stone once moved here from Ytterby on Järvafältet.
The rune stones mark the district – the Kummelby stone and Jarlabanke's stone are among those bearing witness that people lived and worked here long before the age of suburbs. For anyone who grew up between Tunberget and the lakes, or has run past the church where the runners once turned, the map becomes a recognition rather than a decoration.
