An old trading town

Known for

Bråviken

At Skvallertorget, lanes and old houses meet in a town that has long lived by trade and movement. Söderköping lies in Östergötland, some way south of Norrköping, and is sometimes called the Baltic's gateway to the Göta Canal. From here people have travelled, exchanged goods and met since the Middle Ages, with Bråviken as the open road to the sea.

There is a particular calm in walking along the canal on a summer evening, with boats gliding past and the heights all around framing it. From Borgberget and Vikingberget the eye falls across rooftops and water, and Sankt Ragnhild's spring is a reminder that generations have already walked the same paths here. The rune stone remains as a silent trace of those who came before us.

It is the setting that makes Söderköping – that point where the land opens towards the canal and the bay. A map t-shirt of the town draws the lanes around Skvallertorget and the curves along the water, and becomes a fine way of carrying a place you are fond of, however far from home you are.
