About Söderhamn
The Bothnian Sea coast
Oskarsborg
Hälsingland
Up on Oskarsborg stands one of Söderhamn's most recognisable marks, a lookout tower that has become the town's signature. Here Hälsingland meets the sea - Söderhamn lies on the Bothnian Sea in Gävleborg County and is the main town of Söderhamn municipality. The position between coast and forest marks the whole town.
For anyone wanting to understand the district there are Söderhamn museum and the Gäddan fishing museum, which tell of life close to the water. Around the built-up area rise Västra berget and Östra berget, two heights that frame the town and give views over rooftops, harbour and the open sea to the east. In winter people gather at Pulka Backe, where the slope does exactly what the name promises.
It is that mixture that makes the map of Söderhamn a pleasure to look at - hills squeezing in the street pattern, the water cutting in from the east and the tower on Oskarsborg as a fixed point in it all. Wear the shirt and it becomes a small greeting to the evenings up on the hill when the light lies over the Bothnian Sea.
