Skellefteå is sometimes called the Gold Town, and the name runs deep. It is about Boliden and the Skellefte field, one of the world's most mineral-rich areas, but also about Skellefteå Kraft and in recent years Northvolt's battery factory. For many, though, the town is something more personal – it lies on the Skellefteälven, where the E4 crosses the water some way upstream from the Gulf of Bothnia.
The town's soul is found in the cultural and outdoor area of Nordanå, part of the parish centre of national interest where the church town and marketplace bear witness to the district since the Middle Ages. Listed buildings such as Bonnstan and the Lejonström bridge are here, and Skellefteå Museum carries the stories onward. If you want to stretch your legs, Vitberget is close at hand.
Music and sport belong to the picture too – the Trästock festival and Skellefteå AIK mean a great deal to those who grew up here. Bonnstan's grey timber walls carry traces of generations who gathered, travelled and returned. Perhaps it is exactly that kind of belonging that makes you want your town printed across your chest, wherever in the country you end up.
