About Skänninge
One of Sweden's oldest towns
The Skänninge fair
Monastery ruins
At the All Saints church, Skänninge's long history is in the air. Here, north of Mjölby in Östergötland, lies one of the country's oldest towns - a place the Middle Ages never quite let go of. Every August the streets fill with the Skänninge fair, a market tradition that has run for over a thousand years and still draws people from far and near.
Walk around the town and you find the traces everywhere. The ruin of Sankta Ingrid's convent and Sankt Olof's friary tell of a time when Skänninge was a spiritual centre, and around the town hall and the old houses such as Axbomsgården and Sandbergsgården you sense the small-town feeling that made the place what it is. On the map the familiar points suddenly become clear again.
For anyone who grew up here the memories sit in the blocks - the way to school, the fair days, the church bells over the rooftops. A map of Skänninge is a small piece of the feeling of home to carry with you, however far from home you have ended up.
