About Sigtuna
One of Sweden's oldest towns
Old churches and rune stones
Its setting on Mälaren
Around the year 980 Erik Segersäll had Sigtuna laid out on the shore of Mälaren, and with that the place became one of the very first towns in the Sweden of its day. Olof Skötkonung, the country's first Christian king, resided here, and it was in Sigtuna that the first Swedish coins were struck. Until the end of the 1200s the town was a bustling royal, ecclesiastical and mercantile centre, until the land rise turned Mälaren into a lake and shifted the centre of gravity to where Stockholm later grew.
To walk through Sigtuna is to move through a thousand years in a few blocks. The church ruins and the ancient runic inscriptions bear witness to the Middle Ages, while Sigtuna museum and the little town hall tell of the town's continuing life. At Sigtunafjärden the water lies still, and at Tant Brun's coffee house time almost stops over a cup of coffee.
On the map you find the narrow lanes down to the bay, the ruins and the town hall – the same routes where kings and merchants once walked. A shirt with the map of Sigtuna becomes a reminder of exactly that walk between old timber and still Mälaren water.
