The Norwegian border

Mountain lakes

In the far north-western corner of Kiruna municipality, right up against the border with Norway, lies Riksgränsen. That is where the village gets its name. It rests above the lake Vássejávri in Torne lappmark, surrounded by the Sami villages of Gabna and Talma, and all around the mountain lakes spread out – Stasjonsvatnet, Jovikvatnet and Hansenvatnet mirror the sky between the peaks.

Everyday life here revolves around the mountain and the snow. The train stops at Riksgränsen station on the Malmbanan iron ore line, European route E10 brings you here in summer, and Hotel Riksgränsen gathers people who have come for skiing well into spring, when the days grow bright and the nights barely darken. It is a place for those who like to be the last ones on the mountain when everyone else has already changed into swimming trunks.

If you have stood at the very top and looked out over the borderland, you know what it does to you. Carry that feeling with you wherever you go – a piece of the country's northernmost mountain world, close at hand.
