Every design for Överkalix

Along the Kalixälven, where the water makes a distinct Z-bend around the main town and the Ängesån makes its way out into the river, lies Överkalix. The districts of Bränna, Grelsbyn and Brännaberget together form the core, and over the bridge northwards you reach Tallvik. Meänkieli is heard here as naturally as Swedish, and the landscape of water and forest marks daily life.

At the Lillberget ancient village you sense traces of those who lived here long before us. Around the town spread Hansavan and Tallviksavan, Görjevarpavan mirrors the sky and Lappbergstjärnen lies still at the forest edge. South-east of the community, Grundträsket and Djupträsk glitter, and from Sandudden the ferry crosses to Boheden – small pieces of a daily life built around the river and the lakes.

For anyone who grew up with Grelsbyberget in view, or who remembers the days by the river bend, the geography sits in the marrow. A map t-shirt of Överkalix becomes a way of carrying exactly those places with you, the names and inlets that mean something only to those who know them.
