Medieval roots
According to family chronicles the first settlers established themselves in what is today called Sörbyn some time in the 1470s, and from there the settlement spread northwards, past Noret and Kläppen. So Norsjö grew up – a main town in Norsjö municipality in the middle of Västerbotten, with a church district and a history reaching back in time. When the main line through Upper Norrland was laid, the district was tied in by way of the station community at Bastuträsk.
For anyone who grew up here the town carries memories of winters and sport. At the Norsjö ski museum the skiing history lives on, and in the 2000s the district's volleyball teams – not least the women's – put Norsjö on the map far beyond the county border.
Add Stussviken and the bear study in the country round about, and a district emerges where nature and history go hand in hand. On a shirt with the map of Norsjö you recognise the roads around Noret and the villages that once reached out from Sörbyn – the district drawn in its own lines.
