Industrial town

Norrköping spreads out in Östergötland, where the Motala ström makes its way through the town and once drove the wheels of the industrial district that marked the place. The water and the old factory surroundings give the town a character you notice as soon as you move through the blocks.

Around Tyska torget, where Norrköpingshus once stood before Hedvig's church rose on the site, much of the town's history is gathered. By the rapids the Museum of Work is enthroned, and Norrköping town museum carries on the story of life and labour in the town. There are traces here of Moa Martinson too, and the statue of Karl XIV Johan, and in the distance the Sylten stone stands as a mark of its own in the landscape.

It is exactly that meeting of water, brick and rushing rapids that makes Norrköping recognisable on a map – follow the lines of the blocks and you soon find your way back to the river and the square.
