About Munkedal
The Örekilsälven
Salmon fishing
Its setting on the E6
At the inner end of the Saltkälle fjord, where the Örekilsälven makes its way through the landscape, lies Munkedal. The town belongs to Bohuslän and is the main town of the municipality that shares its name. The rivers braid together here: the Munkedalsälven streams down from the northern parts and meets the Örekilsälven, which then divides the town down the middle before the water reaches the fjord. In one you can paddle a canoe, in the other the salmon fishing beckons.
Geographically Munkedal rests north of Uddevalla, along the E6 between Oslo and Gothenburg and with the Bohus line as its connection. Daily life moves between the old and the new – from the Gamla Bruket and the quiet waters at Stale tjärn to a walk in Örekilsparken or up Skreesåsen on a clear day. The Munkedal bridge spans what ties the place's history to today's through route.
It is a town with the murmur of the river in the background and the forest never far away, a place that keeps modestly out of the way and yet sits in the middle of the current. For anyone who recognises these routes and clearings, a shirt with the map of Munkedal can become a small piece of recognition – a reminder of where you belong.
