About Mo I Rana
Steelworks town
National Library
Arctic Circle
On a Saturday in Mo i Rana, families head for Vitensenter Nordland or out to the parks at Revelneset and Jernbaneparken, while the river Ranelva runs into the head of the Ranfjorden. It is the largest town in Helgeland, sitting just south of the Arctic Circle.
What makes Mo different is its double life. It grew as a trading place with a Sámi market and, after the war, became the steelworks town of Norsk Jernverk. When the steelworks closed, the town reinvented itself around Mo industripark and the National Library, whose vaults lie partly inside the mountain. Locals still call it simply Mo, and the name itself comes from the old Mo farm, named for its moorland, where the first church stood.
Rana museum keeps the town's long memory; the map does the same for yours, with the fjord, the river and the streets of Mo laid out in lines you already know by heart.
