Mälaren

At the north-western tip of Mälaren, where the bay narrows and runs on into the Köpingsån, lies Köping. The town is the second largest in Västmanland and the main town of Köping municipality, with an inland harbour a little way up the river holding both an oil terminal and a deep-water berth – an inheritance from the days when shipping tied the interior to the wider world.

There are layers of history here to get lost in. The Ströbo mound bears witness to country long inhabited, while the Gammelgården and Köping Museum gather memories of the town's daily life. At the Car and Technology museum the engineering lives on, and the Johanna statue is one of the town's well-known features.

For anyone who has caught sight of Bondgårdsberget on a clear day, or grew up with the calm water of the Köpingsån, the town's streets and landmarks become something to recognise. A shirt with the map of Köping keeps those places close, wherever you are.
