Vänern and the Klarälven
Where the Klarälven divides into a great fan of branches before the water runs out into Vänern lies Karlstad, in the middle of the Värmland of the poets. The town grew up on a delta at the lake's northern shore and has been a trading place ever since the Viking age, when it bore the name Tingvalla. Today it is the residence town of Värmland County and a lively university town.
The town's very emblem is the sun, immortalised in the statue Sola i Karlstad, which depicts a well-loved waitress. Several poets have left their traces here too – Gustaf Fröding is honoured with a statue of his own, and along the water you meet works such as the Peace monument and Vindarnas boning.
