About Karlsborg
The fortress museum
The Göta Canal
The shore of Vättern
On the western shore of Vättern lies Karlsborg, a place marked by water and military history. The Göta Canal cuts straight through the centre and separates the residential blocks in the north from the rest of the town, while Bottensjön forms a natural boundary in the west. It is a place where the canal, the lake and the fortress inheritance are woven together.
At the Fortress museum the long history comes alive, and from the Klinten viewpoint the wide country opens out. All around lie bays such as Rödesundsviken, Hankaviken and Karlsborgsviken, names that belong to everyday life for everyone living here.
Recognising the line of the canal, the edge of Vättern and the familiar bays on a map - that is a small homecoming to carry with you, however far away you are.
