About Idre
Idre Sami village
Mountains and reindeer herding
The Österdalälven
Idre is the mountain village where reindeer herding lives on – this is home to Idre sameby, the southernmost Sami village in all of Sweden, and it shapes the whole district. In South Sami the place is called Eajra, and the name carries a history that stretches far back in the north-western corner of Dalarna.
Geographically the village sits beautifully where Storån and Sörälven flow together to become the Österdalälven, with Idresjön as the first stretch of that river. The easiest way here is along national road 70, past the many small waters that wind through the mountain landscape – Fisktjärnen, Gunnertjärnen and Högstjärnen among them.
It is in places like Kyrkviken by Idresjön that the feeling of belonging sits – the stillness by the water, the mountains rising all around. A map shirt of Idre becomes a small way to carry that feeling with you, however far from home you happen to be.
