A medieval town
In the middle of Dalarna lies Hedemora, the main town of its municipality and the only town in the province to be granted official town privileges as early as the Middle Ages – that happened in 1459. History has left deep traces here, from the days when the place was a market and a transit point for mining products on their way to the Mälaren valley.
The town's oldest building, Hedemora church, was raised at the end of the 1200s or the start of the 1300s and still stands today. If you want to go further back in time there is the Hedemora Gammelgård, while the motorcycle museum and the memorial stone to the Hedemora TT recall the race that made the town known far beyond Sweden's borders. It was also from here that Hedemora Diesel AB's ship engines were shipped out into the world.
After a harder period in the 1600s, when iron production was cut back, the town found new life in the early 1900s as new industries drew people here and doubled the population. Out in the country you find manor houses such as Svedjan and Hälla. Having the map of Hedemora across your chest is to carry a place you know – a small piece of the home district that comes with you wherever you go.
