About Gällivare
Junction of the Malmbanan and the Inlandsbanan
Dundret
The mining heritage of Malmberget
Where the Malmbanan meets the Inlandsbanan lies Gällivare, a railway junction in Lapland and the main town of its municipality. The Inlandsbanan has its northern terminus here, and neighbouring Malmberget is so close that the two have effectively grown together – barely a kilometre separates their centres. The name lives in several languages: Jiellevárre in Lule Sámi, Jellivaara in Meänkieli, Jällivaara in Finnish.
Many carry with them the sound of trains, the light over Vassaraträsket and the rounded silhouette of Dundret rising above the community. By the Vassara river and Nuolajärvi there is quiet, while Gällivare museum keeps the town's history alive – from ore and railway to the Sámi inheritance and old summer settlements.
It is Dundret that stays in the memory, whether you have climbed it for the view or simply seen the mountain emerge on the horizon. A shirt with the map of Gällivare becomes a reminder of exactly that landscape – the mountain, the rivers and the tracks that tie north and south together.
