About Fjällbacka

Known for

Vetteberget and Kungsklyftan

Known for

The Fjällbacka archipelago

Known for

Ingrid Bergman

Fjällbacka lies on the Bohuslän coast in Tanum municipality, crouching below the rocks with the sea in front of it - the way the old coastal communities turned towards the fishing and the winds. The older settlement creeps right down to the water, while the newer has spread across fields and rock inland.

In the middle of the village rises the 74-metre Vetteberget, and straight through it runs Kungsklyftan. The cleft was long called Ramneklovan, the raven's cleft, but took its royal name after Oscar II visited Fjällbacka. Out to the west the archipelago opens, and furthest out lie the Väderöarna. There is a Sea Rescue Society station here too, a reminder of how close to the sea life is lived.

Among the places you recognise on the map is Ingrid Bergman-torget, which carries the actress's name after her summers in the archipelago. Walking around with that detail across your chest is a small way of saying you have understood what Fjällbacka is about - rocks, skerries and an inheritance reaching from a good catch to a film star.
