About Emmaboda
The railway junction
The Emmaboda festival
The television cake
At the milestone and the Stone Age farmstead a walk through Emmaboda begins, the town in the Småland forest country that grew up where the railways crossed. From here it is the same distance in every direction - fifty-seven kilometres to Växjö, Kalmar and Karlskrona - and that position in the middle of the three-city region has shaped the place ever since the Coast-to-Coast Line was laid. Among the sculptures you find "Älgen", Utvandrarna and "Läppstiftet", and anyone who likes two wheels will find Cykels samlingsplats with both hard-working roads and mountain bike loops out into the countryside.
Emmaboda has its industry in Xylem and the glassworks, but also a patisserie with untouched 1950s fittings where the local television cake is baked - a pastry born to celebrate television reaching Sweden. And the festival? The Emmaboda festival drew people to the district for many summers.
You who wear this shirt: perhaps it is your home district across your chest, perhaps a memory of the forest and the sculptures. Either way - have a good journey, wherever you are headed.
