The Ångermanälven
The history of Lapland
At Lappgubben the mind easily pauses — here history and landscape meet in the southernmost part of Lapland, where Åsele lies as the main town of its municipality. The Ångermanälven flows through the town, and along national road 92 you find your way into a place that has carried people and trade for centuries. National road 90 passes close by, but it is the ground itself and the memories that give Åsele its character.
The town is known above all for Åsele marknad, one of the country's largest fairs, with roots reaching back to the 1600s. That trade has shaped the place more than anything else, and the traces of the old life are still visible. At the Åsele heritage area and Timmerbröten you can sense how generations lived, worked and gathered here long before the roads were drawn on modern maps.
It is exactly that inheritance that makes the map worth wearing. Lappgubben has watched over the district longer than anyone remembers, and keeping Åsele close becomes a way of holding on to a place with depth in time — a market town in Lapland where the history has never quite fallen silent.
