Close to the Norwegian border
On the northern shore of Västra Silen, some way into south-western Värmland, lies Årjäng. The town follows the E18 westwards and has the Norwegian border as a close neighbour — a position that has shaped the whole district between Karlstad in the east and Norway in the west. As the main town of Årjäng municipality, it gathers a countryside of lakes and forest around it.
The Nordiska Travmuseet puts Årjäng on the map for anyone with horses and harness racing in the blood. Around the town a landscape of small waters opens out, with names like Strandtjärnet, Kuvtjärn, Slomtjärn and Katjärn — the tarns belong to the place as much as the streets do.
