About Alingsås
The Café Town
The potato festival
Lake Mjörn
In Alingsås you linger over your coffee. With some 25 cafés, the town has made a name for itself as Kaféstaden, the café town, and the unhurried rhythm shows as you move through the streets and along the Säveån, which cuts straight through the place. Water and everyday life mix here: lake Mjörn on the edge of town, Gerdska ström babbling past, and a small-town feeling that is easy to like.
The town is also called Potatisstaden, the potato town, a legacy of Jonas Alströmer, who made the potato Swedish home cooking — and every year that is celebrated with a potato festival of its own. If you want to know more about the district, there is Alingsås Museum, and out on the water you may spot the steamer S/S Herbert.
For anyone who grew up here, the memories sit in the streets, in the smell from the cafés and in summer evenings by Mjörn. The map of Alingsås becomes a small reminder of exactly that — the place you call home.
