Kijfhoek freight yard

From the water bus stop at Zwijndrecht Veerplein, the Groothoofdspoort stands on the far bank, and the short crossing still follows the oldest logic of this place. Zwijndrecht grew up in the Middle Ages beside a shallow stretch of the Oude Maas where people could walk over from Dordrecht at low water; its name describes a tidal channel you could cross. Most of its early inhabitants lived on fish from the rivers around them. From the seventeenth century its market gardens were famous, with produce shipped as far as England and Germany, and its vegetable auction beside the railway became one of the largest in the country. Glassworks, soap factories and shipyards followed, along with beer, rice and chocolate.

There is a particular feeling to standing on the dike at the southern tip of IJsselmonde, where the Oude Maas, the Beneden-Merwede and the Noord meet and barges pass in every direction. The tower of the Grote of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk rises across the water, trains run north to Rotterdam, and Kijfhoek, one of the largest freight yards in Europe, sorts goods trains just outside town.

Grow up here and the rivers shape every memory: the ride along the water, the crossing to Dordrecht, the lights of passing ships at night. This map holds all of it.
