Did you know that Zielona Góra simply means 'Green Mountain'? It is an honest name. The city sits on the slope of the Oder valley where the river cuts through a band of hills, and those hills have names locals use without thinking: Wzgórze Braniborskie, Jagodowe Wzgórze, Góra Tatrzańska. The whole region is closely tied to vineyards, and an annual Wine Fest keeps that tradition in plain view.
Its position has shaped it from the start. Zielona Góra lies in western Poland, historically on the northern edge of Lower Silesia, on a road and rail route that links Scandinavia with the south of Europe. It is the largest city in Lubusz Voivodeship and shares the role of capital with Gorzów Wielkopolski. The first settlement grew up in the valley of the Złota Łącza stream; Duke Henry the Bearded brought settlers here in 1222, and town rights followed in 1323. The Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej tells the longer story, from Grünberg to the present.
Trace the Złota Łącza, the green ridges and the old centre on the map, and you have the outline of a childhood spent between vine-covered slopes and streets you could walk with your eyes shut.
