City of Weavers
Kolbe's birthplace
Max Factor
Outside the Dom Urodzin św. Maksymiliana M. Kolbego, the house where Saint Maximilian Kolbe was born, it is easy to forget how busy this town once was. Zduńska Wola stands on almost flat ground on the Wysoczyzna Łaska, its centre on a low rise above the Pichna, a right-bank tributary of the Warta, some 45 kilometres west of Łódź.
For many people the town still brings back the sound of looms. In the nineteenth century weavers from Silesia, Saxony and Bohemia poured in, and Zduńska Wola became known as the 'City of Weavers', with dozens of textile firms, its first steam brewery and its first city park. Between the wars it also grew into a railway junction on the coal trunk line. The Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski, the Dwór w Zduńskiej Woli and the Muzeum Historii Miasta Zduńska Wola all belong to that story, as does Maksymilian Faktorowicz, born here, who founded Max Factor.
The land slopes gently down towards the Warta valley. Coming back from it, the centre on its small hill above the Pichna is the first thing that tells you that you are home.
