Renaissance ideal city
UNESCO old town
arcaded market square
Zamość was founded in one stroke: Grand Chancellor Jan Zamoyski laid it out in the late sixteenth century as an ideal city, and the Paduan architect Bernardo Morando gave it the street plan it keeps to this day. UNESCO has since recognised it as a unique example of a Renaissance town in Central Europe.
Walking it today feels oddly unhurried, as if the town still trusts its own design. The arcades frame the Rynek Wielki, the Ratusz watches over the square, and the Pałac Zamoyskich and the cathedral sit exactly where the plan put them. The town held out against Cossack and Swedish sieges and was the last Polish stronghold to surrender in the November Uprising, yet everyday life now runs at the pace of evenings on the square and summer swims at the reservoir on Zamczysko.
Stand under the arcades of the Rynek Wielki at dusk and you will see why people carry this square with them long after they leave.
