The Great Escape
Ducal Palace
Piast burial site
The Great Escape made Żagań famous: the Stalag Luft III prisoner-of-war camp, where Allied prisoners dug the tunnel known as Harry, stood here, and the POW Camps Museum now marks the site. Long before that, the town was founded by Bolesław IV the Curly and served as capital of its own principality for centuries.
What sets Żagań apart is how much grandeur sits in a town of its size. The Pałac Książęcy and its Park Pałacowy recall the dukes, the former Augustinian monastery is one of the burial places of the Piast dynasty and a Historic Monument of Poland, and the Bóbr runs through it all. Today the town is also home to the Polish 11th Armoured Cavalry Division.
The Pałac Książęcy is the landmark people from Żagań point to first – a fine reason to carry the town's map with you.
