coal mining
Górnik Zabrze
Guido mine
Ask anyone in Poland what Zabrze stands for and you will usually get two answers: coal, and Górnik Zabrze, one of the most accomplished football clubs in the country. This industrial city lies in the Silesian Highlands on the Bytomka River, hemmed in by Gliwice, Bytom and Ruda Śląska in the western part of the Metropolis GZM. Mining here reaches back to the 13th century, and after a coking coal seam was found in 1791, mines, steelworks, factories and a power plant followed one another.
Zabytkowa Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Guido is where that story turns into something you can walk through. Together with Szyb Maciej and the Główna Kluczowa Sztolnia Dziedziczna it belongs to a historic coal mine complex listed as a Historic Monument of Poland. From 1915 to 1945 the city even went by another name, Hindenburg, before Zabrze returned for good.
The picture that stays is simple: the tower of Szyb Maciej against a grey Silesian sky, above a city that still measures itself by what lies underground.
