War memorials
Wyszków stands on a high bank above the Bug, near the Biała and Kamieniec forests, where a medieval customs post once charged boats and carts travelling the river trade route. It belonged to the bishops of Płock for centuries, won its town rights, lost them as punishment after the January Uprising and regained them once Poland was independent again.
What sets Wyszków apart is how much memory it holds in a small space. During the Polish–Soviet War, Poles led by Mikołaj Bołtuć won the Battle of Wyszków; at the start of the Second World War came fierce fighting and massacres, and the town's large Jewish community was wiped out. A memorial built from recovered Jewish gravestones, once used by the occupiers as paving, now stands in town, alongside the Pomnik Gloria Victis and the Obelisk Wazów.
For anyone who grew up here, the map traces the curve of the Bug and the streets above it – the town you knew long before you learned its history.
