Września lies on the Wrześnica River in the flat farmland east of Poznań, a market town that took shape along the old trade road between Kalisz and Gniezno. First recorded in a document issued in Poznań, it was a private town of Polish noble families, and its coat of arms still carries the white rose of the Poraj family, its first owners. Swedish wars burned it, Prussia annexed it, and its people kept founding Polish societies to resist Germanisation.
What makes Września different is a school strike. At the start of the twentieth century, Polish children here refused to answer in German during religious lessons; they were beaten for it, their parents were punished by a Prussian court, and the protest spread to neighbouring towns. The Pomnik Dzieci Wrzesińskich and the Muzeum Regionalne im. Dzieci Wrzesińskich keep that story at the heart of town, a short walk from the parish church. After independence, local volunteers formed the Września Volunteer Legion.
Wherever life has taken you since, the streets around the market square and the park named after those children are where Września still feels like coming home.
