Wolfsburg lies along the river Aller and the Mittellandkanal, which cut through the city from east to west, and the town's southern edge reaches up onto the plateau of the East Brunswick lowland.
Schloss Wolfsburg, with its park, is the reminder that the place is older than its car plant: the castle began as a keep beside the Aller and the city shares its name. Everything else is young. The town was planned and founded as a home for the factory's workers, and was renamed Wolfsburg only after the war. Everyday life still turns on the works: shift changes, the Autostadt next to the factory, the crowds heading to the Volkswagen Arena. In between there is the phaeno science centre, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the planetarium and the lake in the Allerpark.
