Did you know Wolfenbüttel sits halfway between the Harz mountains and the Lüneburg Heath? The Oker flows right through the town, taking in the Altenau near Halchter, while the Oderwald lies to the south, the Elm-Lappwald nature park to the east and the Asse hills to the south-east. Braunschweig is only a short way to the north.
Schloss Wolfenbüttel, residence of the Brunswick dukes from 1432, is the place to start. Around it spreads an old town with the largest concentration of timber-framed buildings in Germany, rebuilt in Renaissance style under Duke Julius, who had gracht waterways laid out by Hans Vredeman de Vries. The internationally renowned Herzog August Library, the Lessinghaus and the Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis are all here, and so is the Jägermeister distillery.
Whether you grew up by the Oker, studied at the Ostfalia campus or just never quite stopped missing the place, this is your town, timber frame by timber frame.
