Border town
Winschoten sits in the far east of Groningen province, south of the Dollart and the Oldambtmeer, with Leer and Papenburg just across the German border to the east. It was the capital of the Oldambt, a fertile farming district, and it still serves the whole region as its shopping town.
What sets it apart is a curious late promotion. Winschoten was a market town without city rights for centuries, and when it finally received them it was the last place in the Netherlands to do so, by then a purely symbolic gesture. Its older history is military: in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was a fortress in the chain of strongholds along the border, and the town flag still carries the red outline of a fortress with nine embattlements. Saint Vitus stands on the coat of arms. Of the many windmills that once stood here, three large ones remain, among them Molen Berg, with its unusual sails of movable blades.
Coming back means seeing the white tower of the Marktpleinkerk over the rooftops and the sails of the three mills turning. Then you know you are home.
