Hot springs
Spa town
Capital of Hesse
Have you ever noticed how mild a Wiesbaden winter feels? The city sits in a basin at the southern foot of the Taunus, sheltered by hills to the north and west, which is why it was once called the 'Nice of the North'. Its name means 'meadow baths', and water is the whole point: 15 mineral springs rise in the city centre, 14 of them hot, making this one of the oldest spa towns in Europe.
Wiesbaden lies on the right bank of the Rhine, directly opposite Mainz, with the river forming part of the southern city boundary. North of the centre the land climbs to the Neroberg and on towards the main ridge of the Taunus, and the city belongs to the Rheingau, one of Germany's wine regions. Woodland covers much of the north, vineyards the west. Between them lie the Kochbrunnen, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme and the Leichtweißhöhle.
Grow up here and the map holds the walks up the Nerotal, the long climb north into the hills, and the view back down into the basin where the city keeps its warm water.
