capital of Kashubia
Wejherowo calvary
forested valley
Wejherowo lies in the broad glacial valley of the river Reda, west of Rumia and north-west of Gdańsk, and with Rumia and Reda it forms the Kashubian Tricity. It was founded by the voivode Jakub Wejher, who brought in Franciscan friars, built two churches and laid out a calvary of chapels along the edge of the town forest.
What makes Wejherowo stand out is that it has been called the capital of Kashubia. That identity lives on in the Muzeum Piśmiennictwa i Muzyki Kaszubsko-Pomorskiej w Wejherowie. The town changed hands many times, Polish, Prussian, German and Polish again, and between the wars it was one of the main centres of Pomeranian regionalism. Plac Jakuba Wejhera keeps the founder's name at the centre, and Rezerwat Gałęźna Góra protects a piece of the forest that covers almost half the town.
If you know a word or two of Kashubian, or simply the way up to the calvary, Wejherowo is yours to wear.
