Weimar's name goes back to Old High German words for holy and for standing water, and the town has been on record since 899, growing up around a count's wooden castle in the valley of the Ilm, between Erfurt and Jena.

What makes Weimar unlike anywhere else is how much of Germany's story passed through so small a city. Goethe and Schiller wrote here, Liszt made it a centre of music, Gropius and his circle founded the Bauhaus, and the country's first democratic constitution was signed here, giving the Weimar Republic its name. Goethes Gartenhaus, the Goethe-Wohnhaus, the Haus am Horn and the Bauhaus-Museum Weimar are not distant monuments but part of daily life for the people who live among them, along with the students of the Bauhaus University and the Liszt School of Music.

Come back after a long time away, pass the Goethe-Schiller-Denkmal once more, and the city that belongs to the world feels, again, entirely like yours.
