lakeside setting
Kłosowski suspension bridge
Jesuit college
Wałcz sits on the banks of two lakes, Raduń and Zamkowe, in the middle of the Wałcz Lake District, with forest closing in on three sides and the little River Pilca running through. Smaller lakes lie scattered within a short walk of the town, and the view from almost any edge of it ends in water or pine.
For anyone who grew up here, the town is the smell of a lakeside summer and the sway of the Kłosowski suspension bridge – Most Kłosowski – underfoot as it crosses Raduń. It is also a royal town with a long memory, once known as Deutsch Krone, home to a Jesuit college nicknamed the "Wałcz Athens" that lives on as one of the oldest high schools in north-western Poland, and still a garrison town today.
The Muzeum Ziemi Wałeckiej keeps the local story, and the concrete bunkers of Grupa Warowna Cegielnia show a harder chapter. But it is the bridge over the lake that people picture first, and a map of Wałcz is really a map of its water.
