Lake Durowskie

Two rivers cross in Wągrowiec without mixing, and that rare trick of nature – the Nielba passing through the Wełna – is what the town is known for. Around them spreads a landscape of lakes, and the town itself sits on the shores of Lake Durowskie. Founded by Cistercian monks from Łekno, it grew into a market town with royal privileges for weekly markets and yearly fairs, and today it is a significant centre of the furniture industry.

Wągrowiec lies in the middle of Pałuki, an ethnographic and historical region of Greater Poland, within the Chodzież lake district and about halfway between Poznań and Bydgoszcz. Its oldest core stands on an island ringed by arms of the Wełna and the Nielba, where the first market square and the parish church were laid out. Green spaces such as the Park 600 Lecia and the nature reserves Wągrowiecka ostoja and Śmieszka keep water and woodland close to home, while the Kościół pw. Wniebowzięcia NMP and the Kościół pw. św. Jakuba Apostoła mark the old town.

Stand by the skrzyżowanie rzek and watch one current slip across the other – that is the image anyone from Wągrowiec carries of home.
