Gåsetårnet
Valdemar kings
Ore Strand
Vordingborg is known first for Gåsetårnet, the one fully preserved part of the royal castle where three Valdemar kings held court, and the only surviving fortress tower in Denmark. Around that tower, ordinary life runs at an unhurried pace. This is an old ferry town on the south coast of Sjælland, and trains run from its station to Copenhagen and Nykøbing Falster, while bridges lead out over Masnedø towards Falster. There are three harbours, a historic botanical garden on the castle ramparts and, in summer, a festival week that fills the streets.
Many remember Ore Strand on the Storstrømmen shore, or the quiet edges where the great estates of Rosenfeldt, Iselingen and Marienlyst meet the town. Those estates kept Vordingborg from spreading, which is why nearby villages grew into satellite towns of their own. Vor Frue Kirke stands on the church meadow, with the remains of a moat running from it to the castle ruin.
Vordingborg Slotsruin, and the story told at Danmarks Borgcenter, are reason enough to wear a town that once sat at the centre of the kingdom.
