Did you come to Volda to study and stay longer than planned? You would not be the first. The village on the north-eastern shore of the Voldsfjorden has trained teachers for a very long time, and Volda University College now draws students to teaching, animation, documentary and journalism. Add the hospital, the district court and the upper secondary school, and Volda is the place a whole corner of Søre Sunnmøre comes to.
Volda Church stands in the centre of the village, and around it life is close-knit: the park at Uppheimsplassen, Volda bygdetun and Sivert Aarflot-museet for the older stories, Avisa Møre for the local ones. The peaks are part of daily life too. Rotsethornet and Instehornet rise above, Gildrehammaren gives the view, and Volda Skisenter lies just east of the centre for winter evenings. Ørsta is a short way north along the E39, with the airport at Hovden between the two.
And always the fjord: the ferry pulling out from the centre towards Lauvstad or Folkestad, its wake spreading across the Voldsfjorden.
